8 Signs Dems and the Media Still Don’t Get It

What do the following reactions tell us about what Democrats and media talking heads have learned from Kamala Harris’ election loss?

MSNBC host Joy Reid:

I think it's important to say that anyone who has experienced this country's history cannot have believed that it would be easy to elect a woman president, let alone a woman of color. Let's just be clear. And nothing that was true yesterday about how flawlessly [Harris’] campaign was run is not true now. I mean, this really was an historic, flawlessly run campaign. Queen Latifah never endorses anyone. She came out and endorsed. She had every prominent celebrity voice. She had the Swifties. She had the Beyhive.

New York Times reporter Nikole Hannah Jones:

Former Biden White House press secretary Jen Psaki:

This is a man who's also bragged about overturning Roe v. Wade and stripping away women's bodily autonomy. He's promised to conduct mass deportations to crack down on the rights of millions of Americans. Donald Trump is an anti-democratic force, but he's just been elected democratically in our country.

CNN analyst Bakari Sellers:

This is the second time, the second time that Democrats bet the House on white women and suburban white women. And this is the second time they’ve been left at the altar by suburban white women.

Elie Mystal, justice correspondent at The Nation, on Latinos’ rightward shift:

Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View”:

So why do you think that uneducated white women voted against their reproductive health freedoms? And why do you think Latino men voted in favor of someone who says he’s going to deport the majority of his community?

Former NAACP general counsel Stephanie Jones:

Boston University School of Law professor Jed Shugerman:

To be fair: Some Democratic Party supporters were much more introspective.

Washington Post columnist Shadi Hamid:

Bubba’s Two Cents

Exit polling showed kitchen table issues like inflation and immigration were huge driving forces behind why voters opted for Donald Trump over Harris. Another factor to consider is how tired Americans have gotten of identity-focused messaging and policies. If Democrats are going to double-down on that kind of strategy, I think they’re in for a lot disappointment.
