Dems Are Losing Their Education Edge

When it comes to which party is perceived as being better on education, Dems have held the advantage for decades — but that could be changing. (New York Post)

The latest AtlasIntel poll: Donald Trump has a +3 advantage (50 to 47) over Kamala Harris on who voters trust more to deal with education.

Related: The AtlasIntel polling echoes an extensive study released in April by the non-partisan advocacy group Education Reform Now.

  • Trust in Democrats' ability to deliver effective education outcomes has dropped significantly, especially among key voter groups: Independents (-16 points), Latinos (-10 points), and black voters (-9 points).

  • However, Dems’ lead on "caring" for students remains strong at 15 points.

The trend: Amid a series of public school system challenges and controversies - including declining test scores, pandemic learning loss, chronic absenteeism and clashes over lessons about race and gender - the U.S. has seen an upswing in alternative forms of education (homeschooling and charter schools) and a surging school choice movement.

What Jorge Elorza, the CEO of Democrats for Education Reform, told Politico last year:

We’ve lost our advantage on education because I think that we’ve failed to fully acknowledge that choice resonates deeply with families and with voters.

The vibes: Last year, 70% of Americans said K-12 education in America is on the wrong track, a 27% increase since 2021.
