This Map Suggests the GOP Really Is the Family Party

Blue states are losing American families to their GOP counterparts. (Institute for Family Studies)

A recent Institute for Family studies analysis: In 2021 and 2022, 213,000 families left blue states (0.7% decline), while red states gained 181,000 families (0.6% increase), and purple states gained 38,000 families (0.4% increase).

  • In 11 of the 15 states seeing the most family outflow, Democrats won the last two presidential races.

  • Meanwhile, 10 of the 15 states which gained the most families were purple or red (they voted for the Republican presidential candidate in the last two elections).

The visual: The map below shows positive migration of families in green and negative migration in yellow.

Bubba’s Two Cents

As we noted in our item about unmarried female voters in this edition, single women have become a core Democratic constituency. Combine that with the GOP’s historic alignment with traditional values, and it makes sense for Republicans to lean into “pro-family” policies and messaging.
