The Secular Election

The number: Only 14% of Americans say "Christian" describes Donald Trump or Kamala Harris "extremely" or "very well,” according to a new AP-NORC poll. (AP)

Context: With the possible exception of abortion, social issues haven’t figured much this election cycle, which has been dominated by kitchen table issues like inflation, the economy and immigration.

Bubba’s Two Cents

America’s been growing more secular, and despite critics’ fears, the Trump-era GOP hasn’t really tried to to turn the U.S. into a fundamentalist Christian utopia (There’s an argument that overturning Roe v. Wade actually weakened the pro-life cause by mobilizing support for abortion). In fact, Trump has spent a lot of effort this cycle setting himself out as a moderate on social issues, like when he spoke out against six-week abortion bans and endorsed the legalization of recreational marijuana. With the mainstream GOP no longer championing social conservatism like it used to, what does the future hold for the movement?
