Trump and Kamala Are Popular-Ists
A lot of Americans who could be key to the 2024 election really like the economic proposals Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have been putting out lately. (Morning Consult)
Chart: Morning Consult
A new Morning Consult poll: Two policies proposed by Harris, preventing price gouging during crises and capping prescription drug prices, are the top policies among undecided voters, enjoying +56 and +52 net support, respectively.
Undecideds are in favor of lowering the federal income tax rate, a Trump policy, by a 41-point net margin.
Harris’ controversial rent control proposal enjoys +31 net support.
Policies supported by both Harris and Trump, no taxes on tips (+24) and child tax credits (+26), are also popular.
Zoom out: While there are obviously big differences between the candidates, there’s also been a surprising amount of policy overlap between Harris and Trump, especially on economics.
Bubba’s Two Cents
Fans of limited government surely won’t be thrilled by how much broad support there is for deficit-raising policies, initiatives that could be described as “handouts” and straight up anti-market regulations like rent control. On the other hand, it helps explain what Trump’s thinking when he rolls out stuff like caps on credit card interest rates — he’s just giving the people what they want. Trump once allegedly described himself as a “popular-ist” (not a populist). Man, does that shoe fit.
