Where Americans Break With Trump on Immigration
In the wake of the border crisis, most Americans have become more supportive of Donald Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, but that doesn’t mean they agree with all of it. (Pew Research Center)
A new Pew Research Center survey: Majorities of all voters back Trump’s endorsement of mass deportations, improving border security and letting more high-skilled immigrants into America.
But a slim majority (51%) say they’re in favor of admitting immigrants from all over the world in the name of diversity - a position Trump has implicitly rejected.
While 67% of voters want to admit more civilian refugees, Trump wants to suspend the United States’ refugee program and curb the number of asylum seekers.
It’s pretty safe to assume Trump - who recently railed against illegal immigrants “taking your jobs” - doesn’t agree with the 70% of voters who believe we should allow immigrants into the country to fill labor shortages.
Bubba’s Two Cents
Trump’s rhetoric about immigrants can get pretty colorful and aggressive. Americans have gotten fed up with a massive migrant surge, and that’s made them sympathetic to tougher border security measures. But it’s good to keep in mind that that doesn’t mean they’re as hardcore on the issue as Trump.
